I recently received word that Joe Santos had passed away. He was for many years a deacon in th
e Union Square Baptist Church of Somerville, Massachusetts. The church had at one time been the sponsor of a Portugese speaking congregation. When the second generation became more comfortable with English, the elderly were left to fend for themselves. Joe would on occasion hold a communion service in the home of one of these parishioners. By way of explanation, he would say that a person can worship more readily in his or her native tongue.
I was subsequently told that he had dedicated his new automobile to the Lord's service. This resulted in his wife (Georgie) and him picking up elderly persons for a leisurely drive through the countryside on a Sunday afternoon. This was greatly appreciated by those confined to a drab walk-up urban apartment. He was always careful to return in time for the evening service. Joe was not inclined to absent himself: whether Sunday morning, evening, or mid-week.

His daughter, her husband, and their children briefly visited us some years ago. I was impressed with how much they reflected the devotion of her parents.
As for now, I can't imagine Joe doing anything other than he has done all his life---serving the Lord and others.
